After the Battle of Sharpsburg, Gen. D. H. Hill ordered company commanders to see that barefoot men made moccasins from the hides of beeves that had taken. One soldier was arrested for being barefoot. He was size 12 and would take so much material as to deny another soldier enough to make him a pair of moccasins. The soldier was released.
