Established in Charlotte, North Carolin in 1866, THE LAND WE LOVE is considered one of the best periodicals to spring up in the South after the Civil War. Edited by Gen. Daniel Harvey Hill, THE LAND WE LOVE commented on education, advocated scientific and practical methods for farming, preserved war records and memories, and provided literary criticism among many things.

General Daniel Harvey Hill (1821-1889) published ‘The Land We Love,’ a monthly magazine that first appeared in May 1866 after the American Civil War. This article discusses General Hill’s reasons for publishing a magazine at a time when there was very little money in the country as a result of the war.

After the Battle of Sharpsburg, Gen. D. H. Hill ordered company commanders to see that barefoot men made moccasins from the hides of beeves that had taken. One soldier was arrested for being barefoot. He was size 12 and would take so much material as to deny another soldier enough to make him a pair of moccasins. The soldier was released.
