Abstract:
For years tobacco was life in eastern North Carolina, and today is no different. However, tobacco is paying the bills in a different way. To address chronic tobacco-caused health problems and improve life in formerly tobacco-dependent counties, tobacco companies provide funds to agencies such as the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund and the Golden LEAF.

Abstract:
UNC researchers believe one way to prevent chronic respiratory disease in adults might be to reduce chronic respiratory problems in children. They are conducting a study that involves direct interventions to educate a child’s main caretaker about the hazards of exposure to tobacco smoke.

Anti-tobacco sentiment has risen since cigarette smoking was blamed for thousands of deaths each year. This year the federal government made substantive reductions in its support for tobacco, which has had tremendous economic, political, and cultural importance in North Carolina. Despite this, state politicians and tobacco spokesmen have responded with little protest.

The admiration of this herb, as noted by the local Indians who consumed it, was defined by its believed ability to cure more than two hundred diseases. The irony was not lost on the author: products made from this “excellent herbe” are more likely to cause death than preserve life.
