Abstract:

Daniel Victor Meekins, born on Roanoke Island, worked in the Norfolk shipyards and served in the US Army in WWI. He worked for an Elizabeth City newspaper and then served as Dare County Sheriff from 1928 to 1946. He established the Dare County Times and ran a printing business. He served on the Dare County Board of Commissioners and helped get the network of modern bridges connecting to the Outer Banks.
