Charles Kuralt began his newspaper career in Charlotte. In 1957, he was hired by CBS-TV as a newswriter. He spent his professional career with the network, covering a variety of assignments, including the Vietnam War, Latin America, and the space program. Two of his most poplar programs were \"On the Road\" and \"Sunday Morning.\" Among his awards were fifteen Emmys, two George Foster Peabody Awards, and three Grammy Awards. Kuralt died July 4, 1997.

Through his CBS television program \"Sunday Morning,\" Charles Kuralt brought the beauty of the nation's National Wildlife Refuges to millions of viewers. To honor his efforts, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service created the Charles Kuralt Trail, which links eleven national wildlife refuges and one national fish hatchery. The trail winds though the coastal plain of Virginia and North Carolina, and includes the Great Dismal Swamp and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

One of the most popular features of his CBS television program, \"Sunday Morning,\" was the last five-minute segment in which he brought the beauty of the nation's National Wildlife Refuges and other wilderness landscapes to millions of viewers. Visions of the Tarheel State discussed were that of native sons CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt and realist painter Bob Timberlake. Discussed also was the book they were collaborating of, The Bob Timberlake Collection, featuring Timberlake’s artwork and Kuralt’s marginalia commentary. Interspersed with information about the book was their biographical information.
