Abstract:
The North Carolina Granite Corporation was one of the first commercial natural stone businesses in the state. Since 1889, craftsmen in Mt. Airy have been producing \"granite structures that set the standards for the entire granite industry.\" The company received the Tucker Award in 1977, presented by the Building Stone Institute, for the most outstanding stone structure completed in the last two years. The award was for the Dilworth Plaza in Philadelphia.

John Gilmer, a Surry County farmer, bought the land that North Carolina Granite now quarries back in 1872. At that time the exposed rock was considered \"good for nothing.\" The quarrying company was known as Thomas Woodruff & Sons until 1904, when N.C. Granite was organized. N.C. Granite is the largest granite quarrying firm in the state, and the 90-acre quarry is the world's largest open quarry.

For 73 years, American granite has been quarried and shaped in Mount Airy, North Carolina for buildings, bridges, and memorials throughout the United States. The North Carolina Granite Corporation has pushed ahead with modern machines and methods quarrying and cutting Mount Airy granite, considered one of two best known building granites in the country.

Mount Airy, model for the town in Andy Griffith’s classic comedies, may also be known as site for the largest open faced granite quarry in the world. Locally, Mount Airy’s North Carolina Granite Corp.’s immense supply has been used in its high school’s façade. State projects include the Wright Brothers Memorial. On a national scale, it has been used in projects such as the Arlington Memorial Bridge.
