Abstract:
Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, vacationed often with her parents in Western Carolina. Little could she know that she would die in a fire in 1948 in Asheville's Highland Hospital, where she was confined as a psychiatric patient. The cause of Buncombe County's most disastrous hospital fire, in which nine died, has never been determined.

The Thomas Wolfe Memorial begins recovery efforts after a fire devastated the historic boardinghouse in 1998. Fund-raising started the day of the fire, donations have been sent in from as far as California, London and Japan. Only a portion of recovery costs are covered by insurance; and efforts will rely on continued donation and volunteer support.
