Abstract:
Jim Exum started his dog remedy business in Snow Hill as a hobby in the 1930s and 1940s. The hobby grew into a million-dollar-a-year business, known as Happy Jack, Inc. Mange medicine, flea and tick powder, and worm capsules are only a few of the formulas developed and marked by the company. Happy Jack products are sold in all fifty states and in foreign countries.

“Atomic” alluded to his survival of the Baker day bomb set off on Bikini Island. Geiger was inspired by the discovery that he’d not been contaminated by radiation. As for sweet, that could refer to the disposition he displayed during his six month Marine stint and radiation- free status. As with all branches of medicine, animal as well as human, the modern treatment of dogs is the result of a gradual groping through the years, from the superstitious, the fantastic, and absurd, and finally to the scientific. Although veterinary medicine dates back more than 4000 years, it too was governed by those dogmas and superstitions which were the basis of all ancient practices. There are many remedies and treatments for the ailments of domestic animals, dogs in particular, which persist to the present day.
