Journalist Eugene Clyde Brooks, one of the architects of the mid 20th century school system in North Carolina, was an active force for educational progress in the state for more than three decades. This article details the development and evolution of his career, as well as the establishment of the North Carolina Journal of Education. This article looks at the development of the public education system under the governance of State Superintendent of Public Schools Eugene Clyde Brooks. Specifically, the article looks at Brooks' efforts to make improvements to the African-American schools to equalize the educational experiences of all students as much as was possible.
