Abstract:

The movement to establish a park in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina began in the late 19th century, organized by the efforts Asheville citizens. For many years, the Appalachian National Park Association waged a publicity campaign to gain the support of congressional figures, despite opposition to the establishment of a forest preserve in the Southern Appalachians. Eventually efforts led to the completion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most popular national parks in the country.

Journalist Eugene Clyde Brooks, one of the architects of the mid 20th century school system in North Carolina, was an active force for educational progress in the state for more than three decades. This article details the development and evolution of his career, as well as the establishment of the North Carolina Journal of Education. Information on educational initiatives and legislation proposed or passed during this period is included.

This article looks at the development of the public education system under the governance of State Superintendent of Public Schools Eugene Clyde Brooks. Specifically, the article looks at Brooks' efforts to make improvements to the African-American schools to equalize the educational experiences of all students as much as was possible.

Abstract:

This article examines the debate over federal aid to education in North Carolina, including issues such aid raises in terms of federal-state relations, as well as economic, political and racial issues. Particular emphasis is placed on the Blair Bill and its plan to give funds directly from the treasury to states based on illiteracy rates but required matching funds, public education, and thorough reporting.

This article examines the rise in Religious (Protestant) Fundamentalism in reaction to the wave of secularism and irreverence that arose after the First World War and finally ignited by the controversy over Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, the crusade to protect the \"old fashioned Christian Commonwealth\" from the \"forces of the antichrist\" took hold during this period.
