"Daryl Gaston a pastor and community advocate who died in February, devoted himself to Druid Hills." Druid Hills is one of a cluster of predominantly black neighborhoods north of uptown Charlotte. Gaston with other leaders founded the North End Community Foundation to protect Druid Hills and surrounding neighborhoods in 2014 from a "city high on its own growth."

Beginning in the early 20th century, Black residents in Charlotte established neighborhoods like Greenville and Biddleville in the western portion of the city near Johnston C. Smith University. Historic West End Partners was founded in 2010 to help revive the once prominent Black business district along Beatties Ford Road. Tanya Adams is leading the effort.
