Willard Watson was born on Wildcat Road in the town of Deep Gap in Watauga County. He has lived all his life just a few miles from there. Watson discusses his life and times as a moonshiner.

Williard Watson was a nationally known Appalachian craftsman who had a charming personality and was loved by Appalachian North Carolinians. His great grandson and namesake, Willard Cline Watson III, investigated Watson’s life during his college years. In this article, Williard C. Watson III presents his findings about both the public and private life of his great grandfather.

Willard Watson of Deep Gap in Watauga County, a world-renowned maker of wooden folk toys, died September 26, 1994. Watson, whose works are in the Smithsonian Institution, was also an accomplished storyteller and dancer.
