Kurt Fletcher, a physics doctoral candidate, studies deuterons, the nuclei of a special type of hydrogen atom known as deuterium. Fletcher focuses his research on a quantum mechanics property known as spin, a nuclear force responsible for holding the nucleus of an atom together.

UNC astronomer Bruce Carney and his colleagues have established that the Milky Way Galaxy is at least 18 billion years old. To arrive at their estimate, the group studied several nearby stars called RR Lyrae variable stars.

Researchers in the UNC Health Services Research Center are conducting projects on health promotion among the elderly. They hope to determine whether coverage of selected preventive health services might reduce the cost of disease treatment, and if routine medical screening can reduce risk behavior and improve the quality of life for elderly participants in the program.

Lorna Harris, assistant professor in the UNC School of Nursing, is studying consumers’ thoughts about possible sanctions for substance abuse. In a recent study, she asked consumers’ opinions about substance abuse among health care providers, job performance, and drug testing. She hopes her findings can be used to develop employee drug abuse policies.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has established the Drinking Water Research Center in the School of Public Health. The new center brings existing research and collaborative efforts related to drinking water and contaminants. In addition to conducting research and helping guide drinking water policy, the center will offer monthly seminars tackling different drinking water-related topics.

Hoping to Revitalize East Durham (RED), the PNC had two classes from UNC Department of City and Regional Planning determine a revitalization plan for the historic neighborhood. They determined that PNC should acquire specific houses in a targeted area, refurbish them, and sell them to prospective home owners. This effort has led to four properties being sold and three more renovations in progress.
