Abstract:

Three members of the Stanly family of New Bern--grandfather, son, and grandson--had interesting and turbulent careers and were outstanding figures during their respective generations. They were John Wright Stanly, John Stanly, and Edward Stanly.

Abstract:

By 1862, North Carolina was divided by more than region. In the Piedmont and mountains, secessionists had control of the government. In the Coastal Plain, there was vast Union troop occupation, from major battle losses in Washington, New Bern, Morehead City, Wilmington, Beaufort. All over the state, chaos was also the victor because of conditions such as diphtheria outbreaks; guerrilla forces called “buffaloes”; Confederate forces that were intermittently organized; military generals seizing governmental control in the void of political leadership.

Abstract:

A freedom offered to slaves perhaps lesser known than the Emancipation Proclamation is religious expression. Contraband camps, established by Union troops for former slaves, provided a way for former slaves to openly express Christian faith. Along with African American religious leaders such as James Walker Hood, they helped establish the African Methodist Episcopal Zion church. As for churches such as AMEZ, they also provided a sanctuary from racism and sowing ground for the seeds of political representation.
