Abstract:
The North Carolina School for the Deaf reveals seeds for today’s inclusivity movement were planted over a century ago. As for another initiative possibly viewed as a sign of its times, NCSD responded to the call for racial equality in the 1960s beginning to admit black patients. It is through such initiatives NCSD has developed into a supportive deaf community, thus becoming a second home to generations of children experiencing hearing impairments.

Aycock Brown was a well known photographer and tourism director on the Outer Banks. A large portion of his work is archived at the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo.
