Abstract:
The need for electricity was pressing—twofold more every seven years for rapidly growing areas. The problems contributing to the crisis: shortage of fossil fuels and residents’ reluctance to have electric generating station in their backyard. Westinghouse Electric Company, coupled with Offshore Power Systems, proved the crisis could be averted, the problems were not insurmountable. Their solution for anyone seeking an alternative fuel source and/or not wanting generating stations within sight: nuclear power plants offshore.

As the director of Dare County Tourist Bureau, Aycock Brown proved to be a memorable figure in ways that went beyond his Panama hat and ever present cameras. The best way, though, was a question from strangers directed to denizens: “do you know Aycock Brown”?

Abstract:
Walter Jones expressed a down home mentality in ways that went beyond maintaining his Farmville residency, instead of trading it for Washington DC. As for keeping his down home reputation, that was possible by keeping the campaign promise. Responsible was he in responding to the constituents who elected him to higher office.

The giant industry in terms of impact was Long Mfg, NC Inc. Impact was possible because of the production of goods ranging from tobacco to peanuts, from boat trailers to power units. Another factor that made the impact of the business in business for thirty plus years possible: keeping up with the technological times through its computer system.

The profile for this famous son of Wilson County, recently elected as lieutenant governor, highlighted several areas of his life, primarily those involved with his political career. One was personal (delegate work for the National Grange Youth Conference led to meeting his wife). Another was professional (original career goal: taking over the family’s dairy farm). The last was civic (introduction to public service: college director for the Democratic National Committee).

Abstract:
Thomas W. Willis, director of East Carolina University Regional Development Institute, discusses how rural North Carolina communities can stop rural decline. The rural farm population is decreasing and undergoing drastic changes, as more people migrate to urban area. Rural and smaller communities should form an alliance in the pursuit of economic development and better opportunities of growth.
