North Carolina's community college system is now in its twenty-third year. The fifty-eight community colleges and technical institutes has received national acclaim and is rated among the finest such systems ion the nation. The North Carolina General Assembly has contracted with an independent consulting firm to conduct a study to determine how well the system is performing its mission, what is working and what is not, and what needs to be changed.

W. M. Reese founded the Hickory Printing Company in Hickory in 1917. At his death in 1966, Thomas W. Reese became company president. The company, with plants in Hickory, Asheville, and Valdese, is one of the largest and most successful commercial printing operations in the Southeast and is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in printing craftsmanship. When Volney H. Kyle, Jr., president of North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation, died in 1966, the board of directors offered the job to Frank Barragan, Jr. At the time he was executive vice president with the Savannah Gas Company in Georgia. It was a hard decision to leave his hometown and an established company to join one that was just beginning in the industry; however, he accepted. American Airlines is building a hub terminal in Raleigh scheduled to open in mid-1987. The airline and its commuter partner, American Eagle, will fly eighty-five flights a day to thirty-five cities. The initial phase will create 475 new jobs and about 1,300 ultimately when the terminal is in full operation. The airline is committing about $114 million to the project.

Seven years ago Piedmont Airlines was a medium-sized regional carrier in the Southeast. Today, it is one of the country's major airlines with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion. Since the airlines deregulated in 1978, Piedmont's jet fleet has tripled in size, with a comparable expansion in employees and passengers. The company recently placed an order with Boeing for twenty-five of its 737-400 twinjets, with an option for thirty more, total cost $1.9 billion.

John Gilmer, a Surry County farmer, bought the land that North Carolina Granite now quarries back in 1872. At that time the exposed rock was considered \"good for nothing.\" The quarrying company was known as Thomas Woodruff & Sons until 1904, when N.C. Granite was organized. N.C. Granite is the largest granite quarrying firm in the state, and the 90-acre quarry is the world's largest open quarry.

Treyburn, a planned community located about fifteen miles northwest of the Research Triangle, is the largest private residential and commercial development in the state. Construction will soon begin, with primary financing from private investors, on a tract of land that equals the size of Chapel Hill.

Beginning in 1896 mainly as a supplier of desks for the state's elementary schools, Stone's School Supply has grown into one of the largest suppliers of school materials in its industry. Stone's maintains stores in Raleigh and Charlotte and the two locations serve both Carolinas.
