Founded in 1933 by Dr. W.C. Davidson, first dean of the Duke University Medical School, and George Watts Hill, the Hospital Care Association (HCA) is North Carolina's oldest non-profit, public health service plan. One of 76 Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans which have combined for national enrollment of over 60 million people, began in a one-room office in Raleigh. But now, with growth and progress, approximately 3500 business and industrial firms cover their groups with the HCA.

For 73 years, American granite has been quarried and shaped in Mount Airy, North Carolina for buildings, bridges, and memorials throughout the United States. The North Carolina Granite Corporation has pushed ahead with modern machines and methods quarrying and cutting Mount Airy granite, considered one of two best known building granites in the country.

Holly Farms Poultry Industries, Inc. of Wilkesboro, North Carolina is the largest integrated boiler production organization in the state of North Carolina, and one the five largest in the nation. Started in 1947 when businessmen saw a need for local processing for ready-to-cook poultry, the organization has expanded from 5000 birds a day to 150,000 in an eight hour capacity per day.

Significant business developments have occurred in American Enka Corporation's progress in 1962. One of the nation's leading produces of man-made yarn and fibers, Enka recently broke ground on a new multi-million dollar nylon and polyester yarn plant and announced the expansion of the nylon plant near Asheville to increase capacity in heavy denier yarn.

Organized in 1950, the Piedmont Natural Gas Company is hooked onto the Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line running from Texas to New York to bring natural gas to the Carolinas. In 1961, total assets were worth $45 million, and a $6 million expansion is underway for extended gas services in 1962.

A familiar sight on expressways from Boston to New Orleans are the black and orange insignia on the trucks of Thru-Way J--the Johnson Motor Lines System. The trucks of the Charlotte-based motor carrier shuttle between the south and north, carrying tons of goods to feed the nation's economy. In just 16 years the company has gone from doing less that $400,000 worth of business annually to exceeding $24 million, with 35 terminals and 9200 miles through 16 states.

Over half of the employees own stock in the B.B. Walker Shoe Company, their holdings being considerably larger than that of the management. The result has been strong incentive for increased production, product quality, and sales. From meager beginnings in 1947, the company now boasts over $8.5 million in sales, and over 600 employees produce over 6,000 pairs of shoes a day.

Based on figures from the North Carolina Board of Higher Education, 1962 fall registration in North Carolina's higher education institutes showed a 7.45% overall increase above the previous year. With the addition of 5603 new students, the college-going population in North Carolina reached a new high of over 80800 students, 60000 North Carolina residents.

An annual increase of $30 million in requests has been made by the North Carolina State Board of Education to the Advisory Budget Commission for the improvement of public education. Of this increase, $22 million was requested for the nine month school fund for distribution of the local unites, and the remaining $8 million requested for various special programs.
