Public education spending in North Carolina is at an all time high with over $1.495 billion spend in the decade 1951-1960. From first grade to graduate university courses, spending on public education is approximately 70 cents out every General Fund dollar, the majority of this devoted to educational services below the college level.

In 1958, High Point, North Carolina became home to sixteen new manufacturing and industrial firms. Investments for these firms totaled $960,000 and over $1 million for expansions, while construction totaled over $7.146 million. New industries represent 441 employees in the fields of car works, furniture, wire, TV products, hosiery, and books.

New heights have been reached in North Carolina's efforts to strengthen and diversify the state's industrial development. In 1958, over $253,000,000 were invested for new and expanded facilities, with large increases also in employment and payroll. Investment and expansion also led to major projects in food products and textiles.

A 12 million dollar investment has been made in port terminal facilities at Morehead City and Wilmington, North Carolina. A 20 year expansion program has been developed in anticipation of increased tonnages in 1959, following the expansion and growth of ports seen in leasing and handling facilities.

The largest power generating unit in the Southeast is being constructed by the Duke Power Company on the Catawba River near Belmont, North Carolina. Costing $33 million, the turbo-generators will provide a capacity of 625,000 kilowatts, five units combining for a total capacity of 1 million kilowatts. The voltage will be transformed and delivered to homes and businesses.

Governor Hodges surprised the 1959 North Carolina General Assembly by proposing a balanced budget without raising taxes or increasing schedule rates. This will be accomplished by generous estimates of revenue prospects, use of surplus, windfall payments of individual income taxes adopted from withholding plan of collecting individual income taxes, and holding appropriations to a limit.

In 1953, the Du Pont Plant in Kinston, North Carolina produced the first commercial polyester fiber. Now, the Du Pont plant opened a new venture in North Carolina dedicated to silicon near Brevard in the western mountains. The $70 million investment makes the state eighth in total Du Pont investments.

The Public School Finance Study Commission made recommendations via a $10 million Incentive Plan. This would require counties to levy extra property taxes needed to participate fully. Property taxes based on this levy would be increased an average of 9.2 cents on the dollar, or 7.5%.

The telephone needs of North Carolina are rapidly expanding, and this has been keeping companies like Southern Bell very busy. Last year, more than 42000 telephones were gained in North Carolina, and the total cost of construction was over $21 million. New officers, cable projects, and extensions of current lines also took place in 1958.

One of North Carolina's most beautiful natural attractions, Hickory Nut Falls is a plunging 400 foot waterfall flowing over granite cliffs. Hickory Nut Falls is located in Chimney Rock Park near Asheville with a trail that brings visitors to the top of the great cliffs and to the bottom of the falls.
