Abstract:
The North Carolina Granite Corporation was one of the first commercial natural stone businesses in the state. Since 1889, craftsmen in Mt. Airy have been producing \"granite structures that set the standards for the entire granite industry.\" The company received the Tucker Award in 1977, presented by the Building Stone Institute, for the most outstanding stone structure completed in the last two years. The award was for the Dilworth Plaza in Philadelphia.

Abstract:
Burrows T. Lundy founded the Lundy Packing Company in Clinton in 1950. From a slow start, Lundy now has annual sales of over $100 million and is one of the largest pork processors on the East Coast. The company processes 20,000 hogs a week.

Beacon Manufacturing Company began operations in Swannanoa in Buncombe County in 1925. Originally founded in 1904 in New Bedford, MA, the company had completely relocated to Swannanoa by 1933. Beacon is considered the world's largest manufacturer of blankets.

One of the eleven divisions comprising the North Carolina National Forests, Pisgah became the first large tract of forest land in the country. Occupying some 105,887 acres of land purchased by the National Forest Service, Pisgah became the first established game preserve east of the Mississippi. \r\n

Abstract:
Proposed in 1784 and passed by an enabling acts in 1787 and 1790, construction of the Dismal Swamp Canal began in 1793. Upon completion and increased use, this region became a resort destination for fashionables, beginning in the 1830s. A rival canal, the Albemarle-Chesapeake, opened in 1859, causing a decline in the use and popularity of the Dismal Swamp Canal. Phased out with the inception of railroads and motor vehicles, the canal experienced further decline at the hands of real estate developers as well as receding water levels.

Host of the 1725 General Assembly and home to one of the earliest Native American reservations in the United States, Camden County has a sundry past. Containing one of the oldest settlements in North Carolina, Old Trap, Camden County was once visited by President James Monroe. Beleaguered with a slave insurrection in 1802, and containing the presence of both Baptists and Methodists, Camden County is also known for the town of South Mills.\r\n

Abstract:
Named for the river that winds through the region, Yadkin County is a small county in the northwestern part of the state. Initially settled by Quakers and later known for the Glenn and the Hauser families, who were prominent slave holders, Yadkin County also boasted one of the first newspapers in western North Carolina as well as several federally licensed distilleries prior to prohibition.

In 1959, Angus Mercer and Carrol Taylor started Contractors Service and Rentals, Inc. The company supplies construction-related equipment, parts, and supplies to contactors. With 2,200 units the company has the largest fleet of general construction equipment in the Southeast. Contractors Service can supply everything from paper cups to large cranes.

Mack's Stores, Inc., a variety chain store, began operations in Sanford in December 1923. Today, Mack's operates ninety-six stores in the North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The company employs over 1,600 and projected sales for 1977 are expected to exceed $45 million.

When Jack Howard opened J. T. Howard Advertising Agency in Raleigh in 1945, it was the city's first advertising agency. Over the years he persuaded top creative and advertising management talent to leave big agencies in New York and Chicago and join him. In 1973, he reorganized his company and renamed it Howard, Merrell & Boykin. Over half of the company's business is now national.
