Abstract:
Fred H. McIntyre, Sr. and several other businessmen founded Mid-State Tile Company in Lexington in the 1950s. Ceramic production began there in 1957. In 1974, a second plant went into production at Mount Gilead. The product line now exceeds 6,000 items.

Wachovia Bank & Trust Company was founded in Winston-Salem in 1879. Since then it has been an important source of capital and financial leadership for the state. In 1976, Wachovia had 186 offices in 74 North Carolina cities with a workforce of 5,000 and is the country's third largest bank.

Abstract:
C. V. York and R. J. Cobb formed a construction company in Greenville in 1904. Their first job was to construct the first six buildings of East Carolina Teachers Training School. York bought out Cobb in 1910 and moved the company to Raleigh, establishing a firm that has been in continuous operation ever since.

Seth Lumber Company opened for business in Lincolnton in 1915. A privately owned business, it used the name of one of its founders, Michael Seth Beam. The company incorporated under new ownership as Seth Lumber Company Inc. in 1945. This article describes the company's progress since then.

Lewis Advertising, Inc. opened for business in Rocky Mount in 1969. The company currently bills $3 million and employs twenty people. There are 6,000 advertising agencies in the nation. Of these less than 10 percent are granted membership in the prestigious National Association of Advertising Agencies. Lewis Advertising is a recipient of that recognition.

After serving North Carolina for nearly fifty years and choosing not to seek reelection, Edwin Gill retired as State Treasurer at the beginning of 1977. To honor his long years of service, North Carolina State University created the Edwin Gill Professorship in Business Management.
