Dunn, North Carolina-based Godwin Manufacturing Co. Inc., began in Pat Godwin Jr.'s father's garage but now spans over a million square feet in four states. It is the nation's largest family-owned manufacturer of truck bodies, and among the three biggest body-builders in the nation. Products include almost every type of open-truck body including truck mounted snowplows.

Summit Hill, a 34-acre horse farm in Apex, is part of one of the state's fastest growing industries. Owners Ben and Erin Tursam provide boarding, grooming, and lessons. The North Carolina Horse Council estimates that North Carolinians, both owners and riders, spend over $500 million a year in the horse business.

The Triad region established the marketing strategy of regionalism in North Carolina and it became a model for seven other state-designated regional partnerships. Now, however, politicians are suspicious of regionalism, for many communities are becoming more concerned with individual economic growth. Consequently, population, wages, and employment in the Triad are falling behind the metropolitan regions of Charlotte and Raleigh.

Sparta, North Carolina was chosen as the site for an air-conditioner compressor plant that would bring in 750 jobs. Eventually, the company closed its doors, laying off all of its employees. Descendants of its founders are investing in higher education institutions across the state like Brevard College and local charities like Cabarrus Red Cross. Malt-O-Meal, Inc., founded in Minnesota in 1919, makes ten of the nation's fifty best-selling cereals. Their cereals cost less than major brands through cost-cutting techniques, such as packaging in bags instead of boxes. Major grocery chains and small town ones, like Family Dollar and Dollar General, sell the products. In September 2009, Malt-O-Meal opened a 350,000-square-foor factory in Asheboro.
