A noted culinary expert, Edna Lewis was brought in as the establishment's first chef. "The Fearrington House Cookbook" has been a staple Christmas gift choice for the past thirty five years.

Known at the "High Priestess of Soul", Simone, originally from Tryon graduated from the Allen School for Girls in Asheville. She enjoyed a prolific career as a celebrated jazz musician and civil rights activist. In 2017, her childhood home in Tryon was purchased by a group of New York Black artists for restoration.

Gold Hill was once home to two of the most profitable gold mines in the southeastern U.S. By the early 20th century, the area's 24 mines had ceased operations. Mack's Liver Mush and Meats held the first livermush festival in Shelby in 1985. Located about 2,400 feet beneath Humpback Mountain in McDowell County, Linville Caverns were discovered by two fishermen in 1822 trying to figure out how trout were swimming into solid rock. During the Civil War, the caverns provided refuge for deserting Confederate and Union solders. In 1884, Thomas Edison sent an expedition to locate platinum but never located any.

Retiring after 30 years spent as an accountant at NC State, Bill Bunn planted 50 pecan trees on his childhood farm in 1981. In 1994, he and Dr. Mike Parker, a fruit and nut tree specialist founded the North Carolina Pecan Growers Association in 1994. Bunn died in 2011 without accomplishing his desire to fill his whole farm with pecan trees. His son-in-law Ben Byrd has since taken over of what is now Lakeview Pecans in Bailey, N.C
