With the population rising in the Research Triangle Metropolitan Area, mass transit is a must. However, feuding between the Triangle Transit Authority and the Department of Transportation is keeping a rail system from becoming a reality. One area of dispute is the number of track miles to be moved. TTA says the DOT's mileage request would double project cost and add years to the completion date. Unless the two can agree, the region must seek other solutions to its traffic problems.

Governor Mike Easley favors a state lottery to bolster declining revenues and wants a referendum on the ballot for voters to decide in 2002. While the Senate appears supportive of the referendum, Easley must convince enough House members to insure citizens get a chance to vote.

The Dix Park in Raleigh was created after the General Assembly closed the Dorothea Dix Hospital. Since then, a battle by concerned citizens ensued to keep the park open for public use. Council of State ruled on Tuesday to put the city of Raleigh in control of the 325 acre park, keeping it open for the foreseeable future.

Edward’s darker view of the future of America is contrasted with Barrack Obama’s more optimistic view. The various agencies in the city who help the homeless say the problem is the lack of affordable housing, but little has been done to solve the housing issue. Joe Donovan, Gary Smith, and Dan Schooley have their stories of homelessness described, their inability to find jobs, and how they live without a permanent home.

The issues surrounding the re-zoning of a development in the Lake Falls watershed is explored. Ten reasons why the zoning is bad for the Raleigh area, the local water supply, the environment, and private citizens are stated. The main reason the zoning is drawing the anger from many is due to the pollution future developments may cause and the opening for shopping centers to be built in the watershed area under the new regulations. Wake County’s Board of Commissioners were the group who approved the rezoning.

Willietta Dukes, of Durham, was one of thousands celebrating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in the capital. She returned to her low-wage job at Burger King on West Club Boulevard where she earns just $7.85 an hour. She and many other fast-food workers are planning a nation-wide protest of stepping off the job for a day to draw attention to the country's problem of low-income jobs. The rally is called \"Strike Day' and is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. August 29th at the Martin Street Baptist Church in Raleigh.

House Bill 589 is \"the most restrictive set of voting requirements passed by any state since the civil rights era.\" Reducing early voting time, ending same-day registration, and disallowing most provisional ballots are among some of its features. The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against North Carolina and Republican Governor Pat McCrory because it violates the 14th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Geary states that the job of the NC Attorney General, in this case Roy Cooper, is to represent the people of NC and to defend the Constitution of the United States. He feels that Cooper should go into court and \"declare, in his legal opinion, that the law violates the US Constitution and should be struck down.\"

The actions of the “Majority-5” bloc of the Wake County school board are prompting protests. The school board recently voted to eliminate diversity as a criteria for school placements. The board has claimed that this will help low-income students who were being neglected under the diversity mandate. The facts suggest that the new school assignment system will further hurt low-income minority students. The “Majority-5” are members from mostly upper-middle class, white, suburban areas of Raleigh and the other four school board members represent the city center and mostly poorer, minority students.
