The troubles with unions and workers’ rights at Smithfield’s hog processing plant in Bladen County are detailed. The company has fought the elections of union workers at the plant for years. The fast pace of the processing line has been another problem for workers as there are frequent injuries. Workers from the plant discuss the company’s poor and unsafe working environment.

Learning Together is a preschool in Raleigh that incorporates a basic formula of nine special-needs kids, ages 3-5, in a classroom with nine others of similar ages. The program has been active since 1975, but continues to face funding challenges. In 2015, Enloe High School’s Student Council raised $118,000 for Learning Together, providing a much-needed service of monetary assistance as well as volunteer time.

Last year, Senate Bill 8 removed the limit of 100 charter schools within the state and currently nine applications await approval from the State Board of Education. Governor Bev Perdue appealed to assembly members to grant more money to public schools which would be affected by newly opened charter schools in their district. The issue of education has become highly politicized within the state; Republicans back charter schools and Democrats support the public school system.

The 1995 General Assembly passed legislation authorizing charter schools, or schools operated by a private, non-profit organization. Of the state's ninety-nine charter schools, almost 20 percent of them are located in Wake and Durham Counties. Republicans want more or them; Democrats worry that they are a form of segregation. Geary discusses the consequences of raising the cap on the number of schools.

Amber Smith is the founder of ME3 which matches people with volunteering opportunities. ME3 also fosters the spirit of volunteerism in high school, offering a Community Leadership and Service course. Former Duke University economics professor John Blackburn recently completed a study showing that wind and solar power combined could someday supply more than three-fourths of North Carolina’s electric power. Together, solar and wind power are highly reliable and inexpensive according to Blackburn. The utility companies disagree.
