J. Victor Garcia-Martinez and his lab at UNC transplanted human cells into mice to study diseases particular to humans. Their human-mouse model is the first of its kind and has enabled new possibilities for AIDS research. The Garcia-Martinez lab used the model to find that the Truvada drug can prevent HIV transmission.

Ted Batemen, an associate professor in UNC and NC State’s Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, helped design an experiment with NASA. The experiment sent mice into space to study bone tissue growth. Batemen’s team found that the placebo mice lost bone mass as expected, and the drug-treated mice gained bone.

Bart Ehrman, professor and chair of religious studies, recently published a book about the evolution of the Bible. According to Ehrman, there are thousands of errors in the New Testament and several places where passages were added to early versions of the Bible.

UNC doctoral student Darin Waters is writing the history of the Young Men’s Institute Cultural Center at the Biltmore Estate, which has offered educational programs and other services for African Americans in Asheville since 1893. Waters discovered the Biltmore Estate did not did not force African Americans to leave; rather, Biltmore was part of a mutual agreement that relied on the help of black craftsman and philanthropy.

UNC researchers are exploring how hypnosis can help patients with irritable bowel syndrome. According to Olafur Palsson, an associate professor of medicine, hypnosis can alleviate pain and discomfort by shifting a patient’s focus to positive and interesting things.

Historian Louise McReynolds studies sensationalistic murder cases in Russia. Her analysis of court archives reveal examples of how tradition and pop culture intermingle and produce injustice. Russian judges typically sold tickets to spectators, and many of the trial transcripts were sold as books or made into films.

Harmful algae blooms often occur in China’s third largest lake, Taihu. According to marine biologist Hans Paerl, nutrient-rich sewage from wastewater plants and pollution from factories are the main culprits. Paerl is working with Chinese scientists to recommend pollution controls that could help restore water quality in the lake.

UNC researchers are developing alternatives to fossil fuels and rooftop solar panels to help solve power-grid problems. They formed the company MegaWatt Solar and designed the first fully functional solar tree consisting of units to withstand hurricane-force winds.

UNC musicologist Annegret Fauser completed a study on the power of classical music during World War Two. In her research, the federal government used music to combat Nazi propaganda and to serve as a form of therapy for soldiers. Her analysis of Library of Congress archives described efforts to recruit musicians, performers, and composers for army duty. Fauser found that for some people who were too old to enlist or get drafted, touring as a musician was a substitute for combat duty.
