Abstract:
The number of Latinos registered to vote in the state has doubled since 2008 and Latinos have the potential to sway the election in North Carolina. Overall, the Latino voter bloc is young, but is not always politically engaged. Various reasons prevent participation in the election and some Latinos believe Obama has not kept his promises. Voting groups are still encouraging Latinos to vote and be involved as they will likely be the face of the state in the future according to demographic predictions.

Amanda Arrington is the winner of a 2008 Indy Citizen Award for positively impacting her community. Arrington is the director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs to free dogs from their tethers by building fences around their yards. The group builds fences for pet owners who can’t afford them if the owners first agree to get their dog spayed or neutered.

Durham Police Department’s Eye in the Sky criminal surveillance system in northeast-central Durham is barely functioning. The system was set up to monitor a high-crime area in the city, but many of the cameras do not work or only work occasionally. The circumstances of why the cameras are not working and why the program is not as effective as it should be are detailed.

The effect an ongoing strike at the Moncure Plywood plant in Chatham County is having on employees is detailed. Employees decided to strike after their union’s contract ran out with the company and the company decided to increase mandatory work hours to 60 hours per week. The strike has gone on for 6 months and the union workers have been replaced. This has placed a strain on the employees and their families, but they are committed to fighting for better working conditions.
Abstract:
Clarence Bender, a Democratic state Senate candidate from Nash County ran for election from a prison cell. Bender was arrested on the first day of early voting for allegedly selling drugs to an undercover police officer. Bender’s history and experience as a local politician is explored. Currently a town commissioner in Castalia, NC, Bender has been described by several as a con-man and by others as a well-respected leader in the community.
