Norman E. Jennett, the state's first important political cartoonist, was born in 1877. His political cartoons first appeared in the News and Observer in 1895. He trained at the National Academy of Design and went on to work as an artist for the ST. LOUIS STAR and the NEW YORK HERALD.
Abstract:
William Powell, professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is attempting to change the flag of North Carolina. One of the dates that appears on the flag has been challenged by history scholars, and Powell has suggested using the original colony's flag instead. That flag, which is white and has a red cross of St. George on it, was the one the Lost Colony flew.
Abstract:
In 1947, Walter Cantrell, who had just returned from World War II, purchased an old wooden building in Transylvania County that was once a distillery. Previously, he had worked with the Tryon Toymakers and Woodcrafters since 1927, where he had learned furniture making from a German craftsman. Nearing retirement, he looks back on his career of making antique furniture.
