MINUTES OF THE STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
February 7, 1972

The Psychology Department held its February meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock
February 7, 1972.

PRESENT: Castellow, Martoccia, Daugherty, Corwin, Harrop, Means, Tacker, Moore
Mitchell, Harris, Grossnickle, Long, Higgins, Stapleton. Students
present: Thomas Harrell, Thomas Bates, Dennis Huntley, Kenneth Wright,
Sandra Long.

In the absence of the Chairman Dr. Mitchell presided.

Dr. Mitchell announced that it would be appreciated by the office personnel if
those desiring typing done get the work in at least three days before needed.

This would give the secretary opportunity to schedule the work and use the student
help more effectively.

Dr. Mitchell presented a course proposal: Psychology 428: Somatopsychology of
Disability developed by Vocational Rehabilitation. After a lengthy discussion a
motion was made that the Department approve the course. Motion passed with three
being opposed and eleven in favor.

Dr. Tacker announced that he had been asked to chair a committee to select an
article to be submitted for consideration for the Bisplinghoff Award. Dr. Moore,
Dr. Roberts, and Dr. Means served on the Committee. Four papers were given to the
Committee for selection of one and after considering each paper the Committee
approved Dr. Mean's paper entitled "The hippocampectomy on alternation behavior
and response to novelty" for the Psychology Department's entry.

Dr. Tacker brought before the group for discussion a course proposal--Recreation
427: Group Dynamics in Community Leadership. It is being proposed that this
course be changed from a graduate course to an undergraduate course--Recreation
327G. After a lengthy discussion it was felt that there was too much overlap with
courses already offered in the Psychology Department and that the Department go

on record as opposing this course. (The Department unanimously approved this
position. )

Mrs. Harris was recognized to speak on the results of a questionnaire sent out in
connection with the self-study. The following items were brought before the group:

1. That upperclass students be enlisted to help advise in General College and
in the Department when new majors come into the Department and also during
the summer orientation program with the understanding that they will be
given no final authority but simply trained to help in this burdensome
work. It was suggested that the honors students be recruited to help in
this program.

Mrs. Harris moved that an ad hoc committee be set up that would have
faculty and student members to work out the details as to how the students
would be selected and trained and to plan some kind of continuity for the
program. Motion approved and passed unanimously.

2. The students felt that a great need for an orientation program for new
majors existed, and would be very helpful, the details to be worked out
by the student/faculty committee that would be set up to study the work
of student advising. Mrs. Harris moved that this committee be combined
with the ad hoc committee mentioned above. Motion passed unanimously.

3. The questionnaire showed that the students felt that all standing
committees except those dealing specifically with the Comprehensives
Examination, Graduate Admissions Committee, and Graduate Student
Exceptions Committee should have student members. Dr. Means moved that
one graduate and one undergraduate student be added to each committee
except those listed above; the students to be selected by the Chairman
of the Committee. Dr. Daugherty amended the motion to read: that the
students be selected by the Committee Chairman in collaboration with the
Departmental Chairman and that a minimum of one graduate and one under-
graduate be appointed to each committee. Mr. Harrop suggested that Psi
Chi be given the responsibility of working out a procedure to select the
names of students to be considered for the committee assignments.

The above motion with amendments was passed unanimously.
Mrs. Harris asked that the matter of students attending the monthly staff meetings
be placed on the agenda for the next meeting for discussion.

Mrs. Harris asked that the Student/Faculty Student Advisory Committee be re-
activated. This, she felt, should be put on the agenda for discussion at the
next staff meeting.

Sandra Long brought before the group for discussion the advisability of putting
the file of standardized tests in the Library so they would be available to studeni
needing them for study in their courses. These would be under the strict super-
vision of the person in charge of the library and would not be checked out

to anyone. A discussion was held on this but no action taken.

Dr. Means announced that he was holding a colloquium Tuesday; February 15 from 3-5
in EP 129. Dr. R. S$. Tacker will speak on Behavior Modirication in the Classroom.

Dr. Mitchell announced that Psi Chi would meet February 17.

Dr. Mitchell announced that the spring meeting of NCPA would be held at East
Carolina April 21-22. Dr. Karras, Program Chairman, has announced that the progra:
would be Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. There will be a dinner meeting
Friday night at Brook Valley Country Club at 7:30. This is to be a dutch affair
and the cost will be $5.00. The topics to be discussed will be directed toward
problems of drug usage and treatment. Students should be encouraged to attend.

The meeting adjourned at 5:15.

Charles C. Mitchell, Acting Chairman
