The Psychology Department held its February meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, February
10, 1969.

PRESENT: Mitchell, Rogers, Harris, Kinzie, Tacker, Williams, Long, Martoccia,
Latham, Dixon, Moore, Khatena, Daugherty, Steinberg, Stapleton, Higgins,
Prewett.

Due to a conflict in meetings Dr. Prewett was unable to be present at the hour the
meeting convened and Dr. Mitchell presided.

The reading of the minutes of the last meeting was, by unanimous consent, dispensed
with.

Dr. Martoccia made the following report for the Comprehensive Committee:

1. Mr. John Matson has requested to take the comprehensive examination
February 28. This will be a re-test on the general-theoretical
part only.

Motion made, seconded, and unanimously passed that this request be
granted.

2. Mr. Dan Miller's case was brought up for consideration by the full staff.
After some discussion it was remanded to the Comprehensive Committee
with instructions to issue a decision. The Comprehensive Committee
has full power to act in this case.

Dr. Mitchell announced that he had had only two people express interest in working
on the Ad Hoc Committee to study the problems associated with the comprehensive
examination. He asked for others to advise him if they would be willing to work
on this Committee, and also let him know their schedule so that a convenient meet-
ing time can be arranged.

Dr. Martoccia, reporting for the Library Committee, announced that approximately
$2000 of the funds allotted the Department for the 1968-69 year had been expended;
the balance has been cancelled due to a shortage in funds at the Library. Any
requests for books will be held until such time that the new budget is announced.

Dr. Mitchell stated he had received a call from Dr. Stella Daugherty saying that
some students had taken the Math statistics course and also the Psychology statis-
tics course and received credit for both courses and the Math Department felt there
was too much overlap in the courses for credit to be allowed for both courses.

After a lengthy discussion it was decided that psychology majors be required to

take the Psychology statistics course but that the requirement of Psychology 101 for
a minor be eliminated. Motion made to this effect and it passed unanimously.

Dr. Mitchell presented a course proposal--The Psychology of Cognitive Processess-
Psychology 472. With the consent of the staff it was brought before the meeting
without first having gone through the Curriculum Committee. Motion made and
seconded that Psychology 472 be accepted with an appropriate syllabus to be written.
Unanimously passed.

Dr. Khatena presented a proposal for a new course-~Assessment and Development of
Creative Behavior. Dr. Prewett moved that the proposal be considered before going

to the Curriculum Committee. Motion unanimously passed. Dr. Prewett moved that

the staff endorse the idea to develop a course in this area and Dr. Khatena was

asked to develop a syllabus and course proposal for such a course--either by

himself or in collaboration with other interested staff members. Unanimously passed.

Dr. Mitchell spoke about the sheet that was distributed to the staff before the
meeting requesting information about any research being done by the staff members
or any newsworthy information that they would like included in the North Carolina
Psychological Association Bulletin. Any member having such items were instructed
to notify Dr. Long. Dr. Long stated he had been asked to get this information in
as soon as possible for it to be included in the forthcoming Bulletin.

Mrs. Stapleton presented a new check sheet for psychology majors and copies were
distributed. It was agreed that this sheet met the requirements that would be in
effect beginning with the Fall term, 1969.

The meeting adjourned at 5:30.
