UNIVERSITY

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

sychology is defined as the scientific study of be-
havior. It encompasses such diverse fields as
developmental, social, human factors, organiza-
tional, personality, and physiological psychology.
The application of psychology in the treatment of
emotional disorders is investigated in a number of
undergraduate courses but training in the treatment
methods is typically restricted to graduate programs.

The undergraduate course of study at East Carolina
gives the students an opportunity to sample from all
areas of psychology and involves learning about be-
havior"how people and animals behave in different
situations"and about the methods used by psy-
chologists to obtain that knowledge.

Our curriculum, taught by thirty full-time faculty,
rovides a firm foundation for those who either elect
to seek employment after graduating with a B.A.
degree or for those who choose to pursue a graduate
degree in psychology.

CAREERS

A student who graduates from East Carolina Uni-
versity with a B.A. in psychology can expect to find
employment as a psychological assistant in a mental
health clinic or other social service organization; as
a substance abuse counselor; or in business without
going on for graduate study in psychology. The
degree also can be used to prepare students who
lan to go on for further study in other fields such as
medicine or law.

Since the employment opportunities for students
with only a bachelorTs degree are limited because of
rofessional requirements, almost all professional
sychologists (psychotherapists or those who wish
to teach in a university setting) have graduate
training at either the masterTs or doctoral level.
