In this oral history, Rear Admiral John Conner Atkeson, Sr. discusses shipboard duty in the pre–World War II Navy, including life at Guantanamo Bay, the impact of the Washington Naval Conference, notable naval incidents, and early destroyer service. The interview also discusses World War II operations, such as convoy duty, kamikaze attacks, major Pacific battles, and command decisions. The first interview took place on November 29th, 1975. In the second interview, Lennon states that the date is March 31, 1976, though library documentation records this second interview date as March 30th, 1976.
