Several factors caused the housing recession and profound changes in the home finance delivery system have substantially altered the opportunity for home ownership. Theo H. Pitt, Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Home Savings and Loan Association of Rocky Mount, discusses economic and demographic trends that present major problems for the savings and loan industry and home buyers.

Over one-hundred paintings purchased by the State Art Commission in 1952 with the General Assembly’s one-million-dollar appropriation of 1947 included several well-known Nativity scenes by European masters. One of the most important of them was Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens’, “The Holy Family with St. Anne.” A donation from the Phifer family of North Carolina to the State Art Society was also important in broadening the collection, which is now at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur from Dayton, Ohio flew the first airplane in the North Carolina Outer Banks on December 17, 1903. This article provides background on the Wright brothers, and discusses how they built and flew their plane.
