Clyde F. Smith and his wife Hilda were among the first recreational explorers in the Southern Appalachians. They blazed a series of scenic trails through Western North Carolina and New England. Clyde's specialty in making artful signage openned the first paths for recreational hikers on Roan Mountain, Grandfather Mountin and up and down the Appalachian Trail The couple's work paved the way for today's outdoor lifestyle and volunteer service.

A former textile village located in the foothils of the Blur Ridge Mountains, Old Fort like similar rural communites faces an uncertain fture. A new 42 mile recreational trail planned for the Pisgah National Forest is expected to bring new ooportnities for Old Fort. The first section is schedueled for completion in June 2022. Eagle Market Streets Development Corporationis assistingpredominately African American areas in Old Fort to take advantage of progres offered by the trail.
