Once advertised as the “highest steam line in the world” the Mountain Lily was constructed to carry 100 passengers and cargo down part of the French Broad River between Brevard and Ashville. For Four years the steamboat carried passengers and cargo between Hendersonville and Brevard; and was host to several parties before it ran aground for the last time. There is no evidence that it ever made it to Ashville.

Offering a view of North Carolina that you can’t get on the interstate, the Raleigh to Charlotte train is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist vehicle. When Amtrak turned down a request from NCDOT to provide this same day service, the state of North Carolina decided to purchase its own line.

As the unofficial ambassador of Elizabeth City, Fred Fearing has spent the last 13 years greeting visitors that arrive in town by boat. Fearing is the founder of the Rose Buddies, a welcome wagon group that is now so well known throughout the boating community that they have made Elizabeth City a popular stop for people traveling up or down the Intracoastal Waterway.

The author offers plenty of reasons to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Encompassing 80,000 acres, the parkway, runs from Waynesboro, VA to Cherokee, NC. Construction began in 1936 and was not completed until 1987.
