Washington, North Carolina was originally formed in 1776 from a river settlement known as "Forks of the Tar". It was named in honor of George Washington 14 year before the creation of the nation's capitol. In 1969, the town began a major urban renewal project that included the present Stewart Parkway.

First settled around 1733, Tarboro was chartered on Nov. 30, 1760. the town has a 45-square-block historic district. In 1937, one of the nation's oldest electric cooperatives, Edgecombe-Martin County ENC was established in Tarboro. It is the oldest rural electric cooperative in North Carolina.

Located along the Scuppernong River in Tyrrell County, Columbia is home for the Walter B. Jones Center for the Sounds, the Pococsin Arts School of Fine Craft and the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Originally founded as Elizabethtown in 1793, it was renamed Columbia in 1801.

Area planter Arthur Rhodes Founded what was to become Plymouth in 1787. It was the first incorporated town in the newly formed Washington County in 1807. The town saw significant military activity during the Civil War. Weyerhaeuser added greatly to the local economy in 1937. Selling a portion of this business in 2007 to Domtar led to an unfortunate 33 percent reduction in the workforce. Town historian Tom Harrison notes current rebranding efforts

Gatesville was home to North Carolina's former legendary Secretary of State, Thad Eure. Originally called Gates Courthouse, the name was changed in 1831 to Gatesville. The current Gates County courthouse was built in 1836.

Williamston was first settled as a shipping point along the Roanoke River in the 1730s.The town was incorporated in 1779 and named for William Williams, a colonel in the Revolutionary War. The town suffered much loss in a devastating fire in 1883. Zack Dickerson is Williamston's Downtown Marketing Coordinator. Chartered in 1787, the town houses the oldest commercial brick building in North Carolina. the building now called the Rea Museum hold the orignal Gatling Gun. the town is home to Chowan University founded in 1848.

A current project underway in the town is the multi-million dollar assisted living facility, Affinity Living. the project is being made possible by the Ed Fitts Foundation and the Greater Littleton Development Partnership. the town's biggest draw is perhaps its location as the gateway to Lake Gaston. Located in Halifax County, the town was incorporated in 1877.

Located along U.S. 264 in Hyde County, Engelhard boasts some interesting architecture including the eight-sided Octagon House built by Dr. William T. Sparrow in 1855. R.S. Spencer Jr. is owner of Do It Best Hardware Store, longtime Hyde County historian and editor of Hyde County's Historical and Genealogical Society's journal, High Tides.

Nash Central High School student, Lance Norris began swimming at the Rocky Mount YMCA at age 5. He took the swimming world by storm at age 14 by laying claim to the fastest 1,000-yard swim nationally in his age group.
