In Durham’s most blighted urban neighborhood, Rev. Ken Hammond has not only transformed the local church, but also challenged the community to support an academically rich private school free from the worries of gangs, drugs, and violence. Hammond, a pioneer of integration, has also become a servant leader, going beyond religious leader and encompassing economic and educational ministry.

Through marketing, finance, philosophy, and sociology, students examine professional, recreational, and intercollegiate sports within a larger context.

For years tobacco was life in eastern North Carolina, and today is no different. However, tobacco is paying the bills in a different way. To address chronic tobacco-caused health problems and improve life in formerly tobacco-dependent counties, tobacco companies provide funds to agencies such as the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund and the Golden LEAF.

Among ECU’s accomplishments can be added Aramark and the Volunteer and Service Learning Center’s collaborative creation of Campus Kitchen. It was the first among institutions in the UNC system. As for other ECU students’ food-related endeavors, mentioned was their packing of care packages for military members serving overseas.

The title alluded to a quintessential element of the college experience, albeit as it was known by ECTC students. For an NYC trip, on the itinerary with the famous Statue of Liberty were the less famous Children’s Hospital, Henry Street Mission, and the Cloisters.
