Abstract:
Folk artist Minnie Evans, a long time employee of Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, has had her drawings exhibited in New York City four times. Her work, done mostly in crayon or colored pencil, is of her own original style, though it has been stated that her drawings suggest the manner of the Swiss artist Klee. In general, she is a surrealist, rarely attempting to define the actuality of a person or scene, but instead reveling in an elaborate, swirling, vividly colored pattern of metaphorical suggestion.

Abstract:
The art of Long Creek, Pender County, North Carolina native Minnie Evans will be displayed through this spring in the North Carolina Gallery. Evans work is often inspired by a religious vision she had in the 1930s and from her time as a gatekeeper at the Airlie Gardens at Wrightsville Beach. Evans work often incorporates nature and is described as being closer to Near Eastern art than Western prototypes. The approximately 30 works include paintings, drawings, and collages.

Abstract:
The house originally owned by Sarah Green Jones and Pembroke Jones and its gardens have served many purposes for former owners and the community. It has weathered storms, entertained locals, hosted the Azalea Festival, and provided healing for the battle-scarred youngest son of the Corbett family, who moved in the house in 1948. Though the house is gone, its gardens is very much present. Now a popular visitation spot for people of all ages, Airlie Gardens offers live music, bird walks, and educational programs for schoolchildren throughout the year.
