The Enterprise Waters Program, started by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians as a way to bring fishermen to the waters around Cherokee, is forty years old. The program consists of thirty miles of well-stocked trout streams and three trout ponds. Tons of trout are raised each year in the tribal hatchery, including over 360,000 rainbow trout and hundreds of other species.

Trout fishing in the North Carolina Mountains comes in two types. The first and by far the easiest is the public trout waters that are maintained and stocked with brown and brook trout species. The second type of fishing is spring branch native brook trout fishing. These fish are stream spawned and reared.

The trinity of Bs referred to types of trout that made NC Mountains a popular fishing area. They are Brook, Brown (also known as Speckled), and Rainbow. What makes this sport possible also was the right attire and equipment, along with knowledge of the state’s laws and licenses.
