Abstract:
Angela Bryant was one of four black children who integrated Edwards Junior High School in 1963. She was granddaughter of Wright Parker and Nannie Barnes Parker, who owned Wright's Chick Shack, a restaurant and motel on Hwy. 301. Bryant left for UNC-Chapel Hill in 1969. earning her bachelor's degree in Math and Law. After college she returned to Rocky Mount and helped develop Wright's Center, an adult day care facility in the old Chick Shack building. In 2003, voters elected Bryant to the Rocky Mount City Council, which became the first African-American majority City Council. She was then elected to the NC House District 7 seat in 2007. She then served as State Senator from District 4 from 2012 to 2018. In 2018, Bryant was appointed to a four year term to serve as a State commissioner of Post Release and Parole Supervision.
