Shipbuilding was a tradition in Onslow County even before its boundaries were officially drawn in 1734. This shipbuilding tradition was not limited to small riverine craft and dugouts but included large vessels and steamboats. Swansboro was the main location for these boatbuilding endeavors constituting over half of the vessels built within the county.

The C.S.S. Neuse was one of two ironclads constructed in eastern North Carolina sounds. Ironclads were an important component of the Confederate Navy's strategy to defeat the Union during the Civil War. The author describes the history of the vessel from commission in 1862 to its excavation in 1961.
Abstract:
This article examines the how the shipbuilding industry helped rejuvenate the economy of North Carolina during World War II. Wooden shipbuilding in particular was already established at several small facilities within the state. Through these facilities, 148 wooden vessels were built in North Carolina that saw service in World War II.
