Developer James Goodnight is restoring Raleigh's historic properties to their original specifications. Three of the buildings, each around 10,000-square-feet, are scheduled for completion in the spring and summer. One is the former Nehi Bottling Company, which like the other restorations, will offer space to various clients, like technology and restaurants.

Paul Grainger, aged 72, was murdered in Randolph County in 2008. His wife and two of the killers accepted pleas bargains, but his daughter wanted a trial and was convicted and sentenced to life. Daughter Brandi continued to appeal and the NC Supreme Court is now deliberating her case which centers on the definition of \"constructive presence\" at a crime scene. For a first-degree murder, \"this means that a suspect must be constructively or actively present. North Carolina has defined constructive presence as being \"close enough to a crime scene to render assistance\" to the perpetrators. That, however, was written before the digital era and brings this question--\"Can someone help commit a murder from miles away, as in this case, via cellphone?\" This is the first time the NC Supreme Court has considered this question. A ruling is expected later this year.

The Republican majority in the NC General Assembly passed a new gun law, effective October 1, 2013, which limits \"a municipality's ability to prohibit people with valid conceal-carry permits from bringing handguns to public places, including parks and greenways.\" In Chapel Hill a draft ordinance, which would open up seventeen public spaces, including playgrounds, to permit holders, was introduced. The NC Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense has asked the Chapel Hill Town Council to opt out of changes that would align the town code with the new state law. The Raleigh-based activist group, Grass Roots NC, has threatened to sue the town of it opts out.

Moral Mondays are protests by citizens in response to several actions in 2013 by the North Carolina General Assembly, which is controlled by the Republican Party. Protesters engage in civil disobedience by carrying signs, failing to disburse when ordered, entering the state legislature building, and then being peacefully arrested. Arrests currently total 940, and all cases must be heard by two appointed judges. Reavis, 68, a former newspaper and magazine reporter and now an English professor at NC State University, recounts his court appearance.

He is the choice of the Tea Party to run against the incumbent Senator Kay Hagen. In the words of the Tea Party, they \"don't want to replace Hagen with a progressive Republican like Thom Tillis. What difference would that make?\"
