Description: Martin County farmer John Conrad Getsinger, Sr., a native of Wurttemburg, Germany, participated as a sergeant in Company E of the 1st Regiment of N.C. Volunteers during the Mexican War (1847-1848). This sketch of a pipe-smoking man holding a fish and bird is from his sketchbook made during his stay in Mexico. The German caption reads "Mexikanischer."
