Description: Correspondence from John Posey to his cousin Mathias Embry including news of shared acquittances serving with Posey, talk of women he knew and missed from back home, the state of rations being received, how Christmas was spent by Posey, the difference in weather between South Carolina and Indiana, and his regiment’s arrival at Foley Island, S.C. Posey was stationed on Foley Island, S.C. at this time. Posey (1842?-1864) was a 22-year-old Black farmer from Vincennes, Indiana who enlisted as a Private the newly formed, all-black 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, Company D and died in the Battle of Honey Hill November 30, 1864. Includes envelope and partial transcript.
