Documents Accompanying the Pension Ledgers
Title: Documents Accompanying the Pension Ledgers
Identifier: 0265-001-b3-fa   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/62788)
Description: Loose items found within pension application ledgers for African American soldiers from the Craven County, N.C. area who served in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War. Items include a 1904 personal letter, 1904 advertising correspondence from Segno Success Club, an undated letter, and an unused 1890s fee agreement form related to fees paid for helping someone to file a pension claim. The form includes the entire statute passed by the U.S. Congress in 1884 for claimants seeking a pension. The items are most likely the personal effects of Frederick C. Douglass, a black lawyer, minister, and teacher of New Bern, N.C., who handled pension applications.
