S. Gerald Arnold Oral History Interview, June 19, 2020.
Title: S. Gerald Arnold Oral History Interview, June 19, 2020.
Identifier: UA95.18.05   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/62322)
Description: Video recording of East Carolina alumnus and former N.C. Court of Appeals Chief Justice S. Gerald Arnold's interview for the "The Rise of Alpha Dog" oral history project conducted by Don Leggett. The project explores perceptions of East Carolina as an "underdog" or "alpha dog." Arnold discusses his early education, and motivations for choosing to attend East Carolina. From there, Arnold and Leggett discuss whether East Carolina is currently or historically perceived as an "underdog" institution, how that perception manifests, whether an "underdog" role can have a positive effect on the university, and if or how the role is changing. Next Leggett asks what ECU would look like as an "alpha dog" university, how to maintain the motivation to improve, whether ECU can improve academically while maintaining its role in the economic development of eastern N.C., the role of athletics in how ECU is perceived, and what will show that ECU has met its achievement goals.
