Letter from Fred to George
Title: Letter from Fred to George
Identifier: OH0109   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/60044)
Description: Typed correspondence from Fred [last name unknown] to George [last name unknown]. Fred, a former German petty officer and radioman stationed on the U-373 German submarine, describes his career in detail from 1938 up to 1986. Fred mentions several war cruises or patrols one of which brought him off the coast of North Carolina around Cape Hatteras and off the Oregon Inlet. Following the war, Fred was a member of the the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) before immigrating to the United States to work. At the end of the letter, Fred mentions the sinking of the USS BUCK (DD-420) and appears to be answering a question posed by George as to whether it was a German submarine who sunk the BUCK. On the front of the typed there is affixed a short note attached to Don Lennon, past head of Manuscripts and Rare Books at J.Y. Joyner Library, from Capt. Francis Eugene Somers telling Lennon that this should prove that the Germans sunk the destroyer BUCK.
