Description: Folder containing the 4 items of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation Collection: Thomas F. Coon Papers, 1945, 1993. Coon was a special agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence during World War II. The first is a letter from Thomas F. Coon to a librarian at East Carolina University detailing his donation of an article he wrote as an addition to his book on the history of the U.S.S. Waukesha which was donated to the university. The second item is a copy of the article mentioned in the letter titled The Waukesha, Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the Atomic Bomb by Thomas F. Coon detailing Coon's time aboard the ship. The article details stops the ship made, military life, time aboard the ship in Okinawa during a typhoon and kamikaze attacks, seizure of the Yokosuka Naval Base as part of the Japanese surrender, scenes of Nagasaki following the detonation of the second atomic bomb on the city, the health of fellow soldiers following their exposure to radiation, current care for the occupation forces of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by Veteran's Administration and Defense Nuclear Agency, reunions of military who were aboard the ship during the war, and the debate over the use of atomic weapons.
