Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church and surrounding houses
Title: Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church and surrounding houses
Identifier: 0674-b44-fd   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/50402)
Description: Black and white photo of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church and surrounding houses on West First Street, taken March 12, 1962. A fire nearly consumed the church in early 1969. The church moved to the location on Eighth Street not long after the fire, and is today on Hooker Road. The houses in the foreground were demolished as part of the Shore Drive Redevelopment Project meant to "revitalize" Greenville's downtown area, but which broke up a vibrant African American community and displaced over 250 African American families in the name of economic development.
