Title: Abigail Brothers Stanley Memoir
Identifier: 0243-b1-fa (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/49685)
Description: The Abigail Brothers Stanley Memoir concentrated on the latter half of the nineteenth century in Pasquotank County, N.C. The reminiscences of Mrs. Stanley are of interest for their insight into the social and cultural history of this area. Of particular interest are commentaries concerning the hiding of men in the swamps and woods during the Civil War to avoid the Confederate conscription officers, fighting between "Buffaloes" and "Guerellars" in Pasquotank County, and the hardships confronting the family after the Civil War. The memoir also includes information on the education system in Pasquotank; attitudes toward religion, witchcraft and drinking; punishment for stealing horses; and economic activities of the citizens. Considerable family history is included in the memoir. The memoir is undated.
